Sewing is actually really expensive. I don't recommend taking it up unless you really have a passion for it. For example, this skirt I cut out: Pattern $14 Printing pattern on large scale printer $22 Fabric ~$40 (although I decided to first make it up on an old sheet since I didn't want to waste the expensive fabric if the pattern doesn't fit right) Things I have in my stash and didn't need to buy: elastic, buttons, interfacing, thread, buttons, not to mention the sewing machine and needles plus basic things like scissors, pins, measuring tape, cloth chalk, etc.
